Highlights of Key papers from the 2005 AACEI Annual Meeting  < VIEW the presentation in PDF >

The session will include the award of student scholarships sponsored by the Montreal AACE International section to winners of our annual scholarship competition.

Have you always wanted to attend the AACEI annual meeting but never had the time? Now is your chance to hear from those who attended this summer !

A special presentation has been arranged with several of the attendees of the June 2005 AACEI Conference in New Orleans to highlight some of the most interesting papers. The slides have been acquired with permission of the original speakers and our presenters will summarize key points for your benefit. This technical meeting will also address other highlights of the 49th Annual Meeting including the theme of the keynote address to delegates by Joel M. Koppelman, CEO of Primavera.

The following articles will be addressed:

  1. Marrying Risk Register with Project Trending by John G. Zhao of Suncor Energy will be highlighted by Marlene Rafla ing. Chief Cost Estimator/ Engineer at SNC-Lavalin Inc. This paper discusses how to combine these key project reports as a practical way to forecast and control project costs.
  2. Analyze This! Project Controls Analysis by Nick Candella, PMP, MBA which describes the key steps in project forecasting and analysis of both cost and schedule. Project Controls will never be the same! This will be presented by Les McMullan, Senior Project Controls Manager at SNC-Lavalin Inc.
  3. Preparing a Basis of Estimate by Todd Pickett CCC of Conquest Consulting Group will be highlighted by Marie-Helene Biffi, ing. M. Eng. and Chief of Planning and Estimating , Hydro-Québec. The basis of estimate is the primary estimate reference document. Learn what you must include for the project stakeholders.
  4. Does Sharing Project Data Create Claims? By W.R. Zollinger, PE and M.W. Leary, PE will be summarized by Les McMullan. With construction claims increasing worldwide yearly, this paper addresses the above questions based on an industry survey. See if you can guess the top answers presented in a “game show” format.

Come and join your colleagues, exchange ideas and expand your network. Wine and cheese along with other refreshments will be served. Total session expected to be 1 hour 15 minutes.

The Management of Contingency and its Risk on EPC Projects

AACE International Montreal section is proud to bring to its members and prospect members a panel made of high profile practitioners to discuss the above subject.

We all know how difficult and controversial this subject can be, simply because it is handled from different views by different people and under different circumstances. One of the good descriptions is: "Contingency is measured in the eye of the beholder".

Therefore, we have assembled a panel of four highly qualified experts representing three main stakeholders related to most EPC projects; Owners, Contractors and Consultants.

The total presentation is estimated to a max of 1 ½ hours. Audience will be introduced to the standards and definitions adopted in the industry today guided by the AACEI’s S&K and PMI’s BOK recommendations. This will be followed by 15 minutes presentation by each of the above panel members and finally Q&A and discussion period.

Panel Members:

Dr. O. Moselhi - Chairman of Department of Building, Civil and Environmental Engineering - Concordia University

Mr. Rick Geren, VP Aluminerie Alouette -  Phase II Project

Mr. Adam Malkhassian, VP and Chairman of Risk Evaluation Committee, SNC-Lavalin Inc.

Mr. Haitham Kamil – Lead Cost Engineer, Aluminerie Alouette Phase II, Hatch Associates

Moderator:

Mr. George Baram; Project Manager, SNC-Lavalin Inc.

Software Applications

Speaker:  Daniel R. Boyd, P.Eng., M.Eng., President of Proji-Contrôle Inc.

  • Manage budgeted, committed, actual costs and funding
  • Forecast, anticipate and resolve contract changes and modifications
  • Identify what impact a change will have on your project costs and overall schedule
  • Manage drawings with latest revisions created, distributed and tracked. Track drawings through Design Review to As Built
  • Relate Costs, Drawing management and Submittals to P3e schedules
  • Manage construction contract communications, including transmittals, meeting minutes, RFI's, e-mail and more
  • Build in automated workflow and routing of documents across the web

Alma Smelter Project

Speaker:  Mr. Magdy Boghdady, Eng.  Deputy Project Manager, Bechtel Quebec Inc.

The Alma Greenfield Smelter was a very successful project. At a capacity of 400,000t/year it was completed on schedule, started up very rapidly to full production and was completed at an annual cost per ton lower than three equivalent AP30 technology projects, built in the past 8 years. There were many firsts on the Alma project, which was Alcan’s most ambitious smelter construction project to date. Alcan’s objective was to build the worlds most modern and performant smelter and the outcome has been very positive in the technical system design area, construction execution and start-up of smelter operations.

The Smelter was completed at a cost of 1.6 billion US $. An additional 200M$ was spent by Alcan on infrastructure improvements to local rail and High Tension overhead lines and substations; hydroelectric power plants, Alumina and secondary transformation facilities.

This technical meeting will introduce the audience to the many challenges that were successfully dealt with during the project execution, including labour issues involving structural steel / mill wright workers inter-trade rivalry, which caused some work stoppages; failure of the unions to live up to the project agreement negotiated with Alcan. Another challenge was in the development of the new breakthrough technology and the advanced mechanization and automation employed in the Rodding and bath / butt recycling areas, which negatively impacted capital cost. All issues were resolved during the project within planned start-up targets and all cost impacts are included in the 1.6 billion US $ smelter total capital cost.

Living With Uncertainty in Projects

Speaker:  Roger Graves of Davion Systems Ltd

It has been said that the only two certain things in this life are death and taxes. In the project management world we can simplify this: the only certain thing in project management is uncertainty.

Monte Carlo simulation is a tool which can be used to examine the effects of uncertainty on project costs and schedules. Central to this tool is a description, or model, of the uncertainty associated with each individual cost item. However, if the model does not correspond well to reality, the results of the simulation will be worse than useless, they will be misleading. This presentation will look at the use of open-ended models, which, under conditions of high uncertainty, correspond to the real world much better than the more conventional models used in Monte Carlo. An engineering project will be used to illustrate the effects of using open-ended models as opposed to more conventional models.

Open-ended models are beginning to be used in industry sectors such as EPCM, IT, pharmaceuticals and defense. This presentation, which is based on a paper published by the author in PM Network magazine (Dec 2001), was recently given to the Ottawa Valley chapter of the PMI.

E-Procurement in Project Management

Revolution or Evolution

The end of the twentieth century has brought us changes in the way in which we communicate and approach the market place. The Internet has become an integral part of our business strategy, we are encountering the development of electronic marketplaces; both horizontal and vertical. What do these mean and how do they impact the way we do business?

Do we risk missing the inevitable trend by not participating in the new e-procurement “global” economy and what are the risks associated with this strategy? What are the advantages? Each corporation must establish an e-procurement strategy, regardless as to whether they are participating as the Seller or the Buyer.

This presentation will address the differences in the electronic market places, discuss what is happening within the e‑procurement community, locally and internationally. E-Procurement as a methodology will be reviewed and discussed.
